چکیده
We consider the simulation of the thermal and electrical processes, involved in the radio-frequency (RF) ablation procedure. RF ablation is a low invasive technique for the treatment of hepatic tumors, utilizing AC current to destroy the tumor cells by heating. The procedure consists of inserting an RF probe in the patients liver and attaching a ground pad to the skin. After that the AC current is initiated and maintained for a prescribed duration. We have conducted experiments with a pork liver and an RF ablation apparatus capable of measuring and recording some of the procedure parameters. Those include the applied power, the effective electrical impedance, and the temperature around the tip of the probe. A history of the values at each second of the test is obtained at the end. Our aim is to adjust the material properties and other model parameters for the simulation to fit the experimentally obtained results. The electrical conductivity of the tissue can be deduced from the measured power and impedance. After that, we need to determine suitable heat conductivity and capacity coefficients. This is achieved via temperature curves comparison.

Introduction High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is considered a noninvasive and effective technique for tumor ablation. Frequency and acoustic power are the most effective parameters for temperature distribution and the extent of tissue damage. The aim of this study was to optimize the operating transducer parameters such as frequency and input power in order to acquire suitable temperatu...

We present a model for the numerical simulation of radio frequency (RF) ablation of tumors with mono- or bipolar probes. This model includes the electrostatic equation and a variant of the well-known bio-heat transfer equation for the distribution of the electric potential and the induced heat. The equations are nonlinearly coupled by material parameters that change with temperature, dehydratio...

متن کاملRadio Frequency Thermal Treatment of Liver Tumours -Influence of Blood Perfusion and Large Vessels
Radio frequency ablation (RFA) is a commonly used minimally invasive method of treating liver cancer tumours which utilises RF current for heating tumour tissue up to a lethal temperature. RF current is generated by a power generator and applied to the tumour by an electrode which is inserted into the tumour either during percutaneous or open surgery. RFA is a method that has great advantages c...
